Welcome To My Writing Website

Here I will share bits about my current projects, ideas in development, and details about my process. I may even throw in a random thought or a cartoon or two just for fun.

My stories are snapshots into the interiority of everyday people.

  • Short Stories

My sister Katelyn is singing Landslide from top to bottom, over and over, as we walk alongside the empty two-lane road after a full day of swimming at the lake. We’re almost home when a gust, hot and sudden, spins the dirt beneath our feet into a miniature cyclone.

  • Flash Fiction

Gina wasn’t one of us. She was new. And tall. And pretty. With eyes that could see straight past the pathetic existence of us and our town and into a world I couldn’t fathom. I knew right then that my life depended on our becoming friends.

  • Poems

Her lips sink into the absence of her teeth.

    She doesn’t care.

    She smiles at us anyway.

    Proud.

    Friendly.

About Me

As a child, I would make up stories in my head. Creating characters and escaping to made-up worlds was my favorite pastime. As a teenager, I started putting my stories on paper but never thought of it as more than a hobby.

After college, at various points here and there, I considered changing directions, putting a full stop on whatever I was currently doing to pursue writing full-time, but it always felt foolish and impulsive. I always found a reason to put it off.

Last year, I realized postponing writing wasn’t an option any longer. The clock, as they say, was ticking.

I signed up for every class, seminar, and workshop I could find and read book after book on the craft. Mostly, though, I wrote and wrote.

I am now happily writing full-time. My work has appeared in Writing In A Woman’s Voice and The Lake. I have work forthcoming in 34thParallel Magazine, Ginosko Literary Journal, and Smoky Blue Literary and Arts Magazine.  You can find me on Instagram at @vawiswell.
